Committees
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is the primary body responsible for maintaining international peace and security. It is composed of 15 member states, including 5 permanent members with veto power and 10 elected members. The Council addresses global crises such as armed conflicts, threats to international stability, and humanitarian emergencies. It can adopt binding resolutions, impose sanctions, authorize peacekeeping missions, and call for diplomatic negotiations. In Model United Nations, the Security Council challenges delegates to react quickly, negotiate under pressure, and find realistic solutions to urgent global issues.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is the UN agency responsible for protecting refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced people around the world. Its mission is to ensure their safety, defend their rights, and help them rebuild their lives. UNHCR provides emergency shelter, food, medical care, and long‑term support such as education and resettlement programs. In Model United Nations, the UNHCR committee challenges delegates to address humanitarian crises, propose solutions for refugee protection, and promote international cooperation to support vulnerable populations.
The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) is one of the main committees of the United Nations General Assembly. Its mission is to address global challenges related to international security, disarmament, arms control, and the prevention of conflict. DISEC debates issues such as the proliferation of weapons, regional tensions, cybersecurity threats, and the promotion of global peace. In Model United Nations, DISEC encourages delegates to negotiate solutions that balance national security, international cooperation, and the protection of civilians, while respecting international law.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) works to promote peace by supporting education, culture, science, and communication around the world. Its mission is to ensure quality education for all, protect cultural heritage, encourage scientific cooperation, and defend freedom of expression. In Model United Nations, UNESCO invites delegates to debate global challenges such as access to education, preservation of cultural sites, digital learning, gender equality, and cultural diversity. It is a committee focused on long‑term development, cooperation, and the protection of humanity’s shared heritage.
The Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) is a main committee of the United Nations General Assembly. It focuses on global issues related to human rights, social development, and the protection of vulnerable populations. SOCHUM addresses topics such as gender equality, children’s rights, access to education, discrimination, cultural preservation, and humanitarian challenges. In Model United Nations, SOCHUM encourages delegates to propose cooperative and realistic solutions that improve living conditions, protect human dignity, and promote social justice around the world.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is the UN agency dedicated to protecting the rights and well‑being of children worldwide. Its mission is to ensure that every child has access to education, healthcare, nutrition, clean water, and protection from violence and exploitation. UNICEF works in more than 190 countries, providing emergency aid during crises and supporting long‑term development programs. In Model United Nations, UNICEF encourages delegates to design solutions that improve children’s lives, promote equality, and ensure that young people everywhere can grow up safe, healthy, and educated.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is the UN agency responsible for addressing global challenges related to drug trafficking, organized crime, corruption, and terrorism. Its mission is to support countries in strengthening justice systems, promoting the rule of law, and protecting communities from violence and exploitation. UNODC works through international cooperation, prevention programs, and capacity‑building initiatives. In Model United Nations, the UNODC committee encourages delegates to develop realistic strategies to combat crime, reduce drug abuse, and promote safer, more just societies worldwide.
